The twenty minutes between the shop and your living room is the most dangerous part of a houseplant's life in this country — and the damage does not show up until a week later.

Bringing plants home in winter in Canada is the step every care guide skips. There is exhaustive advice on watering, light and humidity for a plant that is already on your shelf — and almost nothing about getting it there through a January parking lot. Yet a large share of houseplants that mysteriously decline in their first fortnight were injured before they ever reached the windowsill.

The reason this is a Canadian problem rather than a general one is simple arithmetic. Most houseplant advice is written where winter shopping means a cool day. Here it means moving a tropical plant through air that is routinely twenty to forty degrees below the temperature it evolved in, and the plant does not have to freeze to be hurt.

The short answer: tropical houseplants begin taking damage below about 10 °C — well above freezing, with no visible sign at the time — and freeze outright at 0 °C. So the rule for a Canadian winter is: buy the plant last, have it sleeved, warm the car before the plant goes in, put it on a seat rather than in the trunk, and drive straight home. Unwrap it indoors immediately. If it did get cold, move it somewhere warm and then leave it completely alone — the overwatering that follows a cold snap kills more plants than the cold itself.

The Three Cold Thresholds — Only One Is Obvious

Almost everyone knows that freezing kills a tropical plant. The useful knowledge is that two other thresholds sit well above freezing, and they are the ones that catch people out, because nothing appears to happen at the time.

The delay is the whole trap. A plant carried through a −10 °C parking lot looks completely normal when you set it down at home. It stays looking normal through the evening. Four days later the leaves blacken, and by then the trip is the last thing anyone suspects — so the plant gets diagnosed as underwatered, and watered, which finishes it.

How Long Is the Risky Season Where You Live?

Read this table as the conservative floor, not the answer. These are frost dates — the 0 °C threshold. Chilling injury starts nearer 10 °C, so the genuinely risky period is longer than the figure shown, at both ends of the winter. A mild October afternoon in Vancouver can still sit under 10 °C weeks before the first frost arrives.

The practical consequence is that this is not a marginal, few-weeks-a-year concern for most of the country. Vancouver gets off lightest at about 105 days between frosts; Saskatoon sits at roughly 255 — around 8 months in which carrying a tropical plant across a car park needs a moment's thought. Add the chilling-injury margin at both ends and buying houseplants is a cold-weather operation for well over half the year in the Prairies.

The Car Is Not Shelter

This is the single most common mistake, and it is an understandable one: the car feels like being inside. It is not. A vehicle parked outside for two hours in a −15 °C lot is −15 °C, and a cabin needs ten to fifteen minutes of driving before it is genuinely warm rather than merely less cold. Load a plant into a cold car and it stays outdoors for the first half of the journey.

The trunk is worse and should simply never be used in winter. It is unheated, unventilated, pressed against cold steel and road slush, and it never benefits from the cabin heater at all. It is also where a plant is most likely to tip and snap.

  1. Make the plant your last stop. Every other errand becomes time the plant spends in a cooling car.
  2. Ask for a sleeve. Any shop that sells plants in winter has them. If not, an inverted paper bag over the whole canopy works. Cover the foliage, not just the pot.
  3. Warm the car before the plant goes in. Start it, let the heat come up properly, then go back for the plant. This is the step that matters most and the one almost nobody does.
  4. Seat, never trunk. Tall plants go on the back-seat floor. Keep foliage out of the direct blast of a heat vent — hot air on cold leaves is its own shock.
  5. Drive straight home. No “quick stop”. A plant left in a parked car for twenty minutes in February is a plant left outdoors.
  6. Unsleeve indoors, immediately. Condensation trapped against leaves in a warm room invites fungal problems within a day.

What Cold Damage Actually Looks Like

Cold damage is soft and dark. Leaves blacken or go translucent and water-soaked, then limp and mushy. Whole leaves may drop with no warning. On thin-leaved plants such as calathea and prayer plant you often see large dark patches rather than edges; on succulents the tissue turns soft and glassy.

That is worth contrasting with the damage people usually confuse it with. Crispy, brown, papery edges are a humidity or watering problem, not cold — and in a Canadian winter, dry furnace air causes plenty of it. If the damaged tissue crunches, look at your humidity. If it squashes, look at the trip home.

If It Did Get Cold, Do Almost Nothing

The instinct is to intervene, and intervening is what kills the plant. Move it somewhere warm, stable and bright but out of direct sun. Then stop.

  • Do not water on schedule. This is the big one. Cold-damaged roots cannot take up water, so the soil stays saturated and root rot — not the cold — becomes the actual cause of death. Check the soil and wait.
  • Do not repot. Root disturbance on top of cold shock is two injuries at once.
  • Do not fertilise. A stressed plant is not growing and cannot use it; salts accumulate in the soil instead.
  • Do not prune for at least a week. Tissue that looks finished often partly recovers, and cutting costs the plant energy it needs. Remove leaves once they are unambiguously dead.
  • Do not put it beside a radiator to “warm it up”. Rapid rewarming and hot dry air add a second stress. Ordinary room temperature is right.

Most plants that got briefly cold recover. Most plants that got cold and were then watered generously do not.

Which Plants Are Most at Risk
