Your Real Problem Is Latitude, Not Your Window
Almost every houseplant care article tells you to give a plant “bright indirect light”, as though that were a setting you could choose. In a Canadian December it is not — and the reason is not simply that Canada is far north. Toronto sits at almost exactly the latitude of Portland, Maine, and Windsor is further south than Grand Rapids. The reason is that Canada is long. Between our shortest-day city and our longest, the December solstice differs by 2h05 of daylight, so no single sentence about winter light can be true at both ends of the country. The honest first question is not which lamp to buy — it is how much daylight you have to work with where you actually live.

What these numbers are, and are not. They are sunrise-to-sunset hours, computed from each city's latitude with the standard CBM solar model — exact, and the same figures our houseplant light calculator gives you month by month. What they cannot tell you is how much light reaches a leaf. A December sun sits low, so it travels through far more atmosphere and is blocked for much of its short day by buildings, fences and bare branches. Add a week of prairie overcast or Vancouver drizzle and the usable light drops again. Treat the hours as a ceiling you cannot exceed, not as what your plant is receiving.
The practical reading of that table is the gap between the two columns. Windsor loses 6h12 between June and December; Thompson loses 10h33. A plant that was thriving in a west window in July is in a genuinely different room by January, without anybody moving it.
Which of Your Plants Actually Need One
Not all of them, and this is the part a buying guide has least incentive to tell you. Plenty of common houseplants are perfectly content to stop growing from November to March and pick up again when the light returns. That pause is normal behaviour, not a deficiency, and buying a lamp will not change it much.
What suffers is anything expected to keep putting out new leaves through the winter, and anything variegated — a variegated plant has less chlorophyll to work with by design, so it feels a dark month sooner than its plain green cousin, and will often revert to green trying to compensate.

The single clearest symptom across all of these is stretch: the gap between one leaf and the next getting visibly longer than it was in summer. That is the plant reaching, and it is the earliest honest signal that the light is short. Yellowing lower leaves and a hard lean toward the window are the same message arriving later. Three Formats, and Which One You Want
Every grow light sold for houseplants is one of three shapes, and the right choice is decided by your furniture rather than by your plants. All three should be LED — fluorescent tubes and the old incandescent “plant bulbs” are obsolete, less efficient, and in the incandescent case put out enough heat to scorch a leaf.
1. The screw-in bulb — one plant, lowest cost
A full-spectrum LED in a standard E26 socket, which is the size of every ordinary Canadian lamp. You are buying only the bulb, so it is the cheapest way to start, and it disappears into a lamp you already own. The limitation is aim: a table lamp throws light sideways and up as much as down, so pair it with a shade or a clip fixture that points it at the plant.
2. The clip-on gooseneck — a stand or a single large plant
A clamp, a flexible arm and one or two heads. This is the most useful format for most people because it aims precisely, clips to a shelf edge or a table, and moves as the plant grows. Nearly all of them include a built-in timer, which removes the one part of this that people forget. Look for a clamp that opens wide enough for whatever you are actually clipping it to.
3. The shelf bar — a row of plants
A slim LED strip that mounts under the shelf above, lighting the plants on the shelf below. It gives the most even coverage of the three and, mounted properly, is invisible from the front — which matters if this is going in a living room rather than a basement. Most stick or magnet-mount, so you need a shelf they can attach to.
Do not buy a grow-tent panel for a houseplant. The big purple or white boards you see reviewed everywhere are designed to drive a dense crop to flower inside a reflective sealed tent, and they are sized for that: hundreds of watts, a coverage area measured in feet square, and often a fan. In a living room one is expensive to run, unpleasant to sit beside, and no better for a monstera than a small white bulb at the correct distance. The Specs That Matter — and the Ones That Do Not
Distance beats every other number. Light falls off with the square of the distance, so a fixture at 60 cm delivers a quarter of what it does at 30 cm — not half. This is the reason a grow light most often appears not to work: it is across the room. For the small white LEDs suited to houseplants, 30–60 cm above the leaves is the usual band, and the manufacturer's own figure beats any general rule. Ignore watts. Wattage measures electricity consumed, not light produced, and LED efficiency varies enough that two 20W fixtures can differ substantially. The meaningful measure is PPFD — how many photons of usable light land on a given area per second — and its daily total, DLI. Most foliage houseplants are content somewhere around 6–12 mol/m²/day; herbs and anything fruiting want considerably more. “Full spectrum” is close to meaningless as a term — it is unregulated, and appears on nearly every listing. What you are really choosing is white versus blurple, and for a home the answer is white for three reasons: it is pleasant to live with, it lets you actually see the plant's condition, and a lamp you are willing to leave switched on is worth more than a marginally more efficient one you turn off because it makes the room look like a nightclub.
Buy the timer, or a light with one built in. This is the least interesting item here and the one that decides whether the purchase works. Built-in timers usually offer fixed presets rather than any duration you like — 6, 12 and 16 hours is a common set, in which case 12 is the one you want. A grow light run by memory gets run for a week. The whole benefit is consistency through the months when you are least inclined to think about plants.
How Long to Run It, and When to Start
Ten to twelve hours a day for foliage plants, and no more. Plants need a real dark period — a significant part of their metabolism only runs in it — so a lamp left on for twenty hours does not grow anything faster, it just costs more to run.
The way to think about it in Canada is topping up rather than replacing. Find your own city in the table above. If it gives you around eight and a half hours in December and your plant wants ten or more, you are looking for a couple of hours of supplement, which in practice is a timer bringing the lamp on before sunrise and again after an early sunset. In a windowless corner with no daylight at all, the lamp is doing the entire job and gets the full ten to twelve.
For season, late October to mid-March covers most of the country — roughly the stretch when daylight sits under ten hours. Nowhere in Canada needs one from May to August; a June day in Winnipeg runs past sixteen hours. A useful cue is to switch on when you notice the sun no longer reaching as far into the room as it did, which happens weeks before any plant shows it.
Five Ways People Waste the Money
- Putting it too far away. By a wide margin the commonest error, and the inverse-square law makes it worse than it feels. A light on the far side of the room is decoration.
- Buying tent-scale hardware for one plant. More light than a houseplant can use, in a form nobody wants in a living room.
- Running it around the clock. The dark period is doing work. Continuous light wastes electricity and stresses some plants.
- Lighting a plant that wanted a rest. Cacti and most succulents want a cool, dim, dry winter — and for many, that rest is what triggers spring flowering. A lamp actively works against it.

It will do something, but much less than a purpose-built one, and the difference is not brand marketing. A household bulb is engineered to produce light that looks good to a human eye, which means most of its output sits in the middle of the spectrum where our vision is most sensitive and photosynthesis is least efficient.
