💡 Hydroponics & Indoor Growing Hub

Grow lights, tents, nutrients, hydroponic systems, and calculators — for year-round Canadian indoor growing.

Canada's outdoor growing season runs 120–200 days depending on your zone. Indoor growing extends that to 365 — and in Zone 3–4 where outdoor summers are genuinely short, it dramatically increases what you can produce in a year. The equipment barrier is lower than most beginners expect: a decent LED grow light and a basic 4-piece setup will get you growing year-round.

Start indoor growing in Canada in 4 steps: (1) Pick a grow light sized for your space (35–50 W per sq ft of true LED draw). (2) Add an oscillating fan for airflow. (3) Choose your medium — soil for beginners, hydroponics (DWC, Kratky, Dutch bucket) for higher yield. (4) Use a VPD calculator to dial in humidity and temperature. Mars Hydro and Spider Farmer are the two reliable affordable LED brands for Canadian growers.

Common Questions

What is the minimum equipment needed to start growing indoors in Canada?

A grow light and a growing medium are the two non-negotiables. You can start seeds in a basic tray under an LED panel without a tent. A grow tent adds control over humidity, temperature, and smell — useful once you scale up, not required to start. Add a small fan for airflow from day one regardless. For full-cycle growing, a 4-piece minimum: LED grow light, tent or sectioned area, oscillating fan, soil or hydro medium.

What grow light wattage do I need for a 4×4 grow space?

Target 35–50 watts of true LED power draw per square foot. A 4×4 tent (16 sq ft) needs 560–800 true watts — the Mars Hydro FC-3000 and Spider Farmer SE-3000 are well-matched at realistic Canadian prices. Ignore equivalent HPS wattage claims; only true draw matters. Use the grow light calculator to confirm sizing for any tent size.

Hydroponics or soil for indoor growing — which is better?

Soil is more forgiving and the right starting point for first-time indoor growers. Hydroponics produces faster growth and higher yields per square foot but is less forgiving — pH and EC drift can kill a crop in 48 hours. Best beginner hydro systems: deep water culture (DWC) for lettuce and herbs, Kratky method for absolute beginners (a jar plus a net cup), Dutch bucket for tomatoes and peppers. Switch from soil to hydro after 2–3 successful soil cycles.

What is VPD and why does it matter?

Vapor Pressure Deficit is the difference between moisture in the air and what the air could hold at the current temperature. Optimal ranges: 0.4–0.8 kPa seedling, 0.8–1.2 kPa vegetative, 1.0–1.5 kPa flowering. Canadian winter heated rooms typically run too dry — a humidifier brings VPD into range. Use the VPD calculator to check yours.

Can I start vegetable seeds indoors without a grow light?

A south-facing window works for seed starting in February–April across most of Canada, but seedlings often become leggy without supplemental light. A basic LED panel positioned 4–6 inches above seedlings produces noticeably stockier, healthier transplants. Full-cycle growing beyond seed starting requires a proper grow light regardless of window size.

Is there a Mars Hydro discount code for Canada?

Yes — code ZEE at marshydroled.ca takes 3% off any Mars Hydro order. marshydroled.ca is the dedicated Canadian store; buying there avoids import duties and gets faster shipping than the US site. Mars Hydro is also on Amazon.ca with Prime shipping — check both before buying.
