Houseplant winter care in Canada comes down to one number your furnace controls. Here is the physics behind it, the six plants that feel it first, and the three things that actually help — one of which is not misting.

The winter summary: Cold air holds almost no water, and heating it adds none — so a Canadian home runs about 25–30% humidity from November to March against the 50–60% tropical houseplants want. Why Canadian Winter Air Goes Dry — the Actual Mechanism

It is not the furnace drying the air out. The furnace only heats it. The dryness arrives from outside, and the reason is that cold air physically cannot hold much water. Air at −20 °C is nearly saturated at 70% relative humidity — there is simply very little moisture in it to begin with. Warm that same air to room temperature and its capacity multiplies, while the amount of water in it does not change at all. The relative humidity collapses.

What this table is, and is not. It is the humidity of outdoor air once heated — nothing more. A lived-in house makes moisture of its own: breathing, showers, cooking, laundry. That pushes the real figure back up, which is why an occupied Canadian home settles at roughly 25–30% in deep winter rather than the single digits above. Treat the calculation as the explanation for the dryness and the size of the pull, not as a reading of your living room. First, Find Out What Your House Actually Runs At

Everything above says a Canadian home sits around 25–30% in deep winter. That is the typical figure, not a measurement of your rooms — and houses vary far more than people expect. A tight new build with an HRV, an older house with a humidifier on the furnace, and a drafty apartment over a garage will not land anywhere near each other. A basement usually runs damper than an upstairs bedroom in the same house.

A cheap hygrometer settles it in an afternoon, and it changes what you should do. If you are already at 45%, you do not need a humidifier — the browning is coming from a heat register, a cold pane, or overwatering, and buying an appliance would fix nothing. If you are at 22%, you know the humidifier is worth it before you spend the money on one. Put it beside the plants rather than on a far wall, and check it again a few weeks into the heating season, when the number will have dropped.

Which of Your Plants Actually Care

Most houseplants are fine. The ones that struggle are the tropical foliage species whose leaves evolved in humid understorey air, and they show it the same way every time — brown, crispy edges and tips while the rest of the leaf stays green. These six are the ones our own care guides flag as needing real humidity:

Everything else can largely be left alone. Snake plant, ZZ plant, cast-iron plant, pothos, philodendron, jade, aloe and the succulents are all comfortable at 25–30% and will go through a Canadian winter without a single crispy edge. What Actually Raises Humidity — Ranked

3. A pebble tray — marginal. Adds a few percent in the few centimetres directly above the tray. Not nothing, not a solution.

4. Misting — does not work, and carries a cost. It raises humidity around a leaf for a few minutes, then it is gone. Worse, it leaves foliage wet in the dim, still air of a Canadian winter, which is the condition fungal leaf spot wants. Enjoy it if you like; do not count on it.

Water Less in Winter, Not More

This is the mistake that kills more houseplants than the dry air does. The air feels parched, the leaf edges are browning, and the intuitive response is to water more often. It is the wrong move: short days and cool soil slow the plant to a crawl, so it is drawing far less water from the pot than it did in July. A plant that wanted a weekly drink in summer may want one every two or three weeks in January.

Judge by the soil, not the calendar — finger in to the second knuckle, and for most species water only when that depth is dry. The cruel part is that root rot mimics drought: a plant drowning in cold, dim conditions droops and browns exactly like a thirsty one, so the natural response is to water it again and finish it off.

The Other Winter Variable: Day Length

Humidity gets the attention, but at Canadian latitudes the bigger change is often light. December gives roughly 8–9 hours of daylight in the south and under 6 in the far north, much of it overcast. A plant that was happy a metre from the window in August is effectively in low light by December, and it will tell you: growth stops, new leaves come in small, stems stretch toward the glass.

Check the Location Before You Buy Anything

Two winter positions cause damage that looks exactly like a humidity problem, and both are free to fix:

  • Directly above a heat register or beside a radiator. That plant is being blasted with the driest, hottest air in the house and will crisp no matter what the room humidity says. Move it.
  • Touching a cold window pane. Leaves in contact with winter glass get cold damage on the contact points — blackened patches rather than brown edges. A few centimetres of clearance is enough.
