The Bay of Fundy Effect
The Bay of Fundy has the world's highest tidal range — up to 16 metres twice daily — constantly mixing deep cold ocean water with surface water and producing the most stable coastal climate in Canada. Saint John's last frost of May 3 is the earliest of any Atlantic city. The trade-off: cool summer ocean temperatures and frequent fog. Fredericton, just 100 km inland, loses all Fundy moderation and gains classic continental valley frost-pocket behaviour. The 21-day spread between Saint John and Fredericton is the largest within-province frost variation in Atlantic Canada and reflects how dramatically Bay of Fundy moderation works.
New Brunswick inland (Fredericton, Sussex, Edmundston) can drop to -5°C even in late May. A 2.4×9m frost blanket protects an entire raised bed. Available at Cedar Rim Nursery, Halifax Seed, and most NB garden centres.
