Why Nova Scotia's Frost Dates Vary So Much
Nova Scotia is shaped like a long peninsula surrounded by cold Atlantic water, with two interior frost pockets (the Annapolis Valley and the Truro-Stewiacke region) where geography traps cold air. The result: a 21-day spread in last-frost dates across a single province.
- Atlantic moderation — the Labrador Current keeps spring cool but stable. Coastal Nova Scotia rarely sees dramatic cold snaps but warms slowly into June.
- Annapolis Valley frost pocket — the sheltered valley between North Mountain and South Mountain traps cold air on still spring nights. Despite being south, the valley's last frost runs 5 days later than Halifax.
- Truro / Bible Hill frost pocket — cold air drains down from surrounding hills into the head of the Minas Basin. Truro's last frost runs 8 days later than Halifax just 100km away.
- Cape Breton — cooler, higher elevation in the highlands, more exposed to ocean cold currents. Growing season 30–40 days shorter than the South Shore.
Nova Scotia inland frost pockets (Truro, Annapolis Valley) can drop to -3°C into late May. A 2.4×9m frost blanket protects an entire raised bed. Available at Halifax Seed and most NS garden centres.
