CANADA GROWING GUIDE

Growing Marjoram in Canada — Not Hardy Like Its Cousin Oregano

Frequently mistaken for oregano, but marjoram is tender to Zone 9 and can't survive a Canadian winter outdoors. Sow dates for growing it as the annual it has to be here.

Marjoram sits next to oregano at nearly every garden centre, and the two are close enough relatives that it's an easy mix-up. In Canada, though, only one of them survives winter outdoors.

Marjoram is tender (Zone 9), so treat it as an annual here — start it early indoors, enjoy a season of milder, sweeter leaves than oregano, and replant next spring (or overwinter it indoors as a houseplant if you want to skip that step).

Growing marjoram in Canada: tender to Zone 9 — cannot survive a Canadian winter outdoors, must be grown as an annual (or overwintered indoors as a houseplant). Start seed indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost; transplant after last frost once nights are mild. Harvest before flowering for peak flavour.

Getting the Best Flavour From Marjoram

Harvest before flowering

Aromatic oil content peaks just before bloom. Regular light harvesting through the season also delays flowering and keeps the plant productive longer.

Full sun, drier soil

Well-drained soil and full sun concentrate the aromatic oils somewhat compared to rich, wet conditions — though marjoram's flavour is inherently milder than oregano's regardless.

Consider overwintering indoors

Potting up an established plant before fall frost and bringing it to a bright, cool indoor spot skips restarting from seed every spring, similar to overwintering rosemary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is marjoram hardy in Canada?

No — tender to Zone 9. It must be grown as an annual or overwintered indoors.

Is marjoram the same as oregano?

Close relatives, but oregano is Zone 5 hardy and a true perennial; marjoram is tender and must be replanted yearly.

When should I start marjoram seed?

8–10 weeks before your last frost date — seed is slow to germinate.
