Crop Rotation for Canadian Gardens

Crop rotation sounds like something for farms with fields to spare. It matters more in a small garden, not less — because the same few square metres take the punishment every year. The good news is that the whole thing reduces to four plant families and one rule, and it still works when you only have two beds.
Crop rotation means not growing the same plant family in the same soil year after year, because the diseases and pests that build up in soil are family-specific — what attacks cabbage attacks all brassicas. Group your vegetables into four families — brassicas, nightshades, alliums, legumes — plus a flexible catch-all, and move each group on one bed each year for a three- to four-year cycle. The Cycle
Move each group on one bed per year. The classic order puts legumes before the hungry crop that follows them:
Year 1 — Legumes (peas, beans) fix nitrogen
Year 2 — Brassicas use that nitrogen
Year 3 — Alliums and roots
Year 4 — Nightshades, then back to legumes
What If You Only Have Two Beds?
Most Canadian home gardens don't have four tidy beds, and partial rotation is worth far more than none. Prioritise in this order:
- Keep brassicas and nightshades apart and moving. These carry the problems that last longest and hurt most. Everything else is negotiable.
- Even half a bed counts. Alternating halves year to year, or shifting the tomato patch two metres, measurably reduces build-up compared with the identical spot.
