PRUNING GUIDE

When to Prune Trees in Canada

Late winter for most shade and ornamental trees, the exceptions that matter, and the Ontario oak rule that came in with oak wilt.

When to prune trees in Canada is late winter for most shade and ornamental trees, before the buds open. The University of Minnesota Extension calls the late dormant season the best time for most pruning: the cuts are open for only a short time before spring growth starts to close them, and with no leaves you can see the branch structure.

Three groups break that rule: oaks, the trees that bleed sap, and the trees that get fire blight. Oaks are the one with a Canadian twist.

Trees at a glance: most shade trees: late winter, before buds open. Oaks in Ontario: never from the start of April to the end of July, and ideally not until after November. Maple, birch and walnut: after the leaves are fully open. Crabapple, mountain ash and hawthorn: late winter, February to early April.

The Exceptions

Tree When Why
Most shade and ornamental trees late winter cuts close quickly once growth starts
Oak late fall to winter; never April to July oak wilt is spread by beetles drawn to fresh cuts
Maple, birch, walnut, butternut after leaves fully open late-winter cuts bleed sap
Crabapple, apple, mountain ash, hawthorn late winter (February to early April) spring or summer cuts spread fire blight
Honeylocust while still dormant in late winter avoids stem cankers

All from the University of Minnesota Extension, except the oak dates, which are Ontario’s.

Oaks and Oak Wilt in Ontario

Oak wilt is a fungal disease that can kill oaks. The Government of Ontario says it was found in Canada for the first time in 2023, in the Niagara Falls area, and has also been detected in the Township of Springwater near Barrie and in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Red oaks can die within 2 to 12 months of infection.

Sap beetles carry the spores to fresh wounds. Ontario’s advice: do not prune or wound oaks from the beginning of April to the end of July, the high-risk period, and ideally not between April and November, when the beetles are active. If an oak is wounded in that period, paint the wound. Suspected infections are reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

This is the one case where wound paint is recommended. Wisconsin says that otherwise tree paint and wound dressing slow wound closure and are not recommended.

Maples and Other Bleeders

Maples, birches and walnuts pour sap from cuts made in late winter. Minnesota says the bleeding does little harm, but to avoid it, prune after the leaves are fully expanded in late spring or early summer, removing no more than a quarter of the live foliage. Wisconsin adds willow, beech, hornbeam, elm and yellowwood to the list of trees that bleed. See when to prune maple trees.

Late Fall or Late Winter?

The two extension services differ here. Wisconsin says most deciduous trees can be pruned from late fall to winter. Minnesota says autumn or early-winter pruning is more likely to cause drying and dieback at the cuts, and prefers late winter. Both agree that late spring and summer are poor times for most trees. Late winter satisfies both.

Young Trees and Big Trees

Wisconsin says not to prune a newly planted tree except for broken, diseased or dead branches, since it needs its leaves to grow new roots. After two to five years, start shaping it: remove crossing branches, double leaders and suckers, and never take more than a third of the crown at once.

For large limbs, use the three-cut method: an undercut part-way through about 30–45 cm from the trunk, a second cut further out to drop the limb, then a final cut just outside the branch collar, never flush with the trunk. Leave large trees, and any tree near power lines, to a certified arborist.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to prune trees in Canada?

Late winter, before the buds open, for most shade and ornamental trees. Oaks, maples and fire blight hosts such as crabapple are the main exceptions.

When should I prune trees in Ontario?

Late winter for most trees. Do not prune oaks from the start of April to the end of July, and ideally not until after November, because of oak wilt.

Can I prune an oak tree in summer?

Not in Ontario. The province asks people not to prune or wound oaks from April to the end of July, and to paint any wound made during that time.

Can I prune trees in the fall?

Wisconsin says late fall is acceptable for most deciduous trees; Minnesota prefers late winter because fall cuts are more prone to dieback. Late winter is the safe choice.

Should I put wound paint on pruning cuts?

Generally no: Wisconsin says it slows healing. The exception is an oak wounded during the growing season.

When should I prune a maple tree?

After the leaves are fully open in late spring or early summer, to avoid heavy sap flow.
