When to Plant Grass Seed in Atlantic Canada
Fall seeding dates for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland, and the grass types that cope with a wet, icy Atlantic winter.
When to plant grass seed in Atlantic Canada is late August to early September for most lawns. The ocean keeps fall mild on the coast, so Halifax can seed into early September, while inland Fredericton and western Newfoundland should finish in August.
Atlantic winters bring freeze and thaw, rain and ice more than deep cold, and that shapes which grass seed to choose as much as when to sow it.
Atlantic grass seeding at a glance: Halifax: by early September. Charlottetown, Saint John, Sydney, St. John’s: by late August to the first days of September. Fredericton, Moncton, Corner Brook: by mid to late August. In spring, wait until the soil is above 10°C.

The fall dates use this site’s rule for every lawn page: seed at least six weeks before the average first fall frost, so the grass has time to root before winter. The frost dates are Environment and Climate Change Canada normals; every date in the table is counted from them, not typed.
Coast vs Inland
Halifax has the latest first frost in the region, in mid-October, so it can seed into early September. Inland, Fredericton and Moncton reach their first frost in late September, which puts their deadline in mid-August. Corner Brook, in Zone 4b, is similar.
Grass for a Wet, Icy Winter
The University of Massachusetts, writing for a similar northeastern climate, notes that fine fescues tolerate low pH, low fertility, shade and drought, which suits many Atlantic lawns on acid soil. Perennial ryegrass establishes quickly but, it warns, is susceptible to ice-cover injury. In a winter of freezing rain, a mix that leans on fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass is the safer choice. Spring Seeding
In spring, the University of Saskatchewan says grass seed germinates best once the soil is above 10°C. Soil lags behind the air, so it suggests waiting for daytime temperatures of about 15°C. That usually means two to four weeks after the last spring frost.
Getting the Seed to Take
Keep the seed moist until it comes up: the University of Saskatchewan says to water daily, or even twice a day, and that new grass takes about two weeks to germinate and be ready to walk on. Press the seed into the soil so it makes good contact; seed sitting on top of thatch rarely takes.

Shade
Shaded lawns are the exception to fall seeding. The University of Massachusetts recommends overseeding thin, shaded turf in early to mid spring, as soon as the soil reaches about 10°C, because more light reaches the ground through bare or young tree canopies than in late summer. See grass seed for shade.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I plant grass seed in Nova Scotia?
In Halifax, by early September. In Sydney, by late August or the first days of September.
When should I plant grass seed in New Brunswick?
Saint John by late August; Moncton and Fredericton by mid-August.
When should I plant grass seed in Newfoundland?
St. John's by late August or the first days of September; Corner Brook by late August.
Which grass seed suits an Atlantic lawn?
A mix with fine fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Fine fescues tolerate acid, low-fertility soil and shade; perennial ryegrass is prone to ice-cover injury.
Can I plant grass seed in spring instead?
Yes. Seed once the soil is above 10°C, which the University of Saskatchewan says usually means daytime temperatures of about 15°C. Spring-seeded grass needs regular watering through its first summer.
What if I miss the fall deadline?
Wait for spring rather than seeding late into fall. Seed sown too close to freeze-up comes up tender and often does not survive the winter.
