Why PEI Spring Stays Cool
The Gulf of St. Lawrence surrounds PEI and is partially ice-covered through April most years. The cold Gulf water keeps surrounding air cool well into May, producing PEI's signature cool slow spring. This same water moderation makes PEI's winters mild compared to inland New Brunswick at the same latitude — the trade-off is delayed spring warmth. Soil temperatures lag air temperatures by 2–3 weeks in PEI gardens; even after frost risk passes, cold soil slows growth of heat-loving crops. Black plastic mulch warms PEI soil 5–8°C and is widely used by commercial potato and vegetable growers and worth adopting for home gardens.
PEI typically drops to -2°C in late May. A 2.4×9m frost blanket protects an entire raised bed. Available at Vesey's Seeds (PEI-based) and most Atlantic garden centres.
