Why "Banana Tea" Barely Works
"Banana tea" — a peel soaked in water for a few days — is the most viral version of the trend. The pitch is that the water pulls out the potassium and gives the plant a free liquid feed.
What actually happens: cold water leaches a small fraction of the soluble nutrients out of the peel surface and dissolves some sugars and pectins. The result is a faintly sweet, faintly nutritious water — well below the dose in any cheap liquid fertilizer. The sugars then ferment, the jar starts to smell, and when poured onto a houseplant the residual sugars feed mould and fungus gnats.
It is not dangerous. It is just not useful enough to bother with, and the indoor downsides are real. A bottle of balanced liquid fertilizer at the garden centre is more concentrated, cleaner and far cheaper than the work involved.
The One Method Worth Using
- Chop peels small and add them to an outdoor compost pile or worm bin, mixed with browns (dry leaves, shredded cardboard) at roughly one part peels to three parts browns.
